Design a mobile app unifying shopping, loyalty, and direct credit into a single, modern experience.

Challenge

Initially scoped as a simple app to support a new loyalty program, the project quickly expanded as new requirements emerged around complex loyalty mechanics and credit engagement.

Solution

A modular, CMS-driven app built around a centralized home dashboard surfacing loyalty status and special offers. Clear hierarchy, familiar patterns, and progress-focused messaging made complex systems into an experience that felt approachable, motivating, and easy to use.

The rules surrounding the cashback program were simple, but required careful thought and design to communicate with customers positively.

How It Works

Users are placed into one of three tiers based on their most recent purchase:

  • 10% Cashback if within the last 60 days

  • 7.5% Cashback if 61–90 days have passed

  • 5% Cashback after 90 days

The Core Challenge: A Motivating Cashback Program

First Iteration

The initial direction was a countdown timer to show when a user’s tier would drop. This solution was clear and easy to implement, but emphasized loss which was felt stressful and transactional for users.

Final Direction

Based on client feedback, the design shifted towards positive reinforcement and gamification prioritizing progress and reward over loss to maintiain motivation and engagement.

Inspired by habit-forming products like Duolingo, the cashback program was built around a streak model where a purchase refreshes the streak and locks in the highest cashback, while missing defined thresholds lowers it.

Animation

To further communicate progress and change, I designed two animated screens: a streak refresh after a purchase, and a tier drop that felt informative rather than punitive.
